Plug-in solar is moving from a niche concept to a growing part of the U.S. solar market.
In a new feature from Solar Power World, APsystems USA Country Director Doug Hewitt discusses the momentum behind balcony solar, the growing demand for DIY energy solutions and how products like the APsystems EZ1 are making solar more accessible to homeowners and renters alike.
“The market is telling us that people are actually really interested in this,” Hewitt said. “It’s giving everybody a chance to go solar. I think it’ll be huge.”
As more states open the door to plug-in solar, we’re excited to help make generating your own energy simpler, more flexible and more accessible.

Before APsystems microinverters power your system, they pass multiple rounds of rigorous testing.
🌦️ Cold. Heat. Water. Salt spray.
Laboratory testing verified stable operation of APsystems microinverters across temperatures from −40°F to 149°F (−40°C to 65°C). IP67 water protection remained effective after one hour of immersion at a depth of approximately 3.3 feet (1 meter), while corrosion resistance testing further verified performance in demanding salt-spray environments.
For installers, partners, and project customers, long-term confidence begins with evidence. Here, that evidence comes test by test, across the conditions that shape real-world performance.

Plug-In Solar Gets the Green Light in California!
Congrats, California! With SB 868, the Plug and Play Solar Act, now signed into law, California becomes the 10th state to legalize plug-in solar.
It’s a big step forward for plug-in solar and products like the APsystems EZ1 Plug-In Microinverter. Pair the EZ1 with the APmeter for smart zero-export control where needed.
The new law opens the door for more homeowners and renters to generate their own clean energy. Taking effect January 1, 2027, it sets safety requirements and allows qualifying plug-in solar systems to operate without a traditional utility interconnection agreement.

DIY Doug’s garage. Teddy Talks. Plug-in solar. And, thankfully, absolutely no electrocution.
In this quick EZ1 lesson, Teddy breaks down one of the biggest questions around plug-in solar: is it actually safe?
The short answer: yes.
Teddy walks through how the EZ1 connects, what its UL listings mean, and how quickly the system shuts down when unplugged or during a grid outage.
No sparks. No shocks. No garage fire. Just plug-in solar doing what it’s supposed to do.

Picking panels for an EZ1 setup? Don’t go by wattage alone. A panel can look like a match on paper but still fall outside the microinverter’s operating range.
Our free guide walks you through four numbers to check on the panel label or datasheet: Vmp, Voc, Imp and Isc. It also explains how compatible lower-wattage panels, including flexible panels, can be paired to connect up to four panels to one EZ1.
Take a look before choosing your panels: https://usa.apsystems.com/document/apsystems-pv-module-selection-guidelines-for-ez1-lv/

Plug-in solar isn’t replacing rooftop solar. It’s opening the door to customers traditional solar hasn’t always been able to reach.
A new PlugInSolarUS article explores why solar installers should consider adding plug-in solar to their offerings, including the opportunity to serve an estimated 44 million renters alongside apartment dwellers, homeowners and customers looking for a more flexible entry point into solar.
The article covers:
⚡ New customer and revenue opportunities for installers
⚡ Electrical and safety considerations for plug-in systems
⚡ State-specific permitting and interconnection requirements
⚡ System sizing and stocking strategies
⚡ Partnerships with property managers and HOAs
⚡ The growing role of energy resilience and battery storage
As plug-in solar continues to expand, products like the APsystems EZ1 give installers another way to bring proven microinverter technology to a broader range of customers.

After 10 years installing solar, Solar Goat unboxed the EZ1 and had the reaction we love to see: “It seems hilarious to me that solar could be this simple.” 😂☀️
He’s used to the wiring, conduit, junction boxes, and other work that go into a traditional rooftop install. So seeing the EZ1’s two panel inputs and included cord—with a plug on the end—was a genuine “wait, that’s it?” moment. @the_solar_goat
Watch his first look as he unboxes the EZ1, connects a panel, and walks through the setup from an installer’s point of view: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqfkRxSbH8s

A solar project years in the making is now helping the Ronald McDonald House of Southern Colorado reduce its electric costs by nearly two-thirds.
Planning began in November 2023, and after an incredible community effort, the $300,000 project was completed in June 2026. The system includes 196 solar panels, two inverters and 108 APsystems rapid shutdown devices, with every component and service made possible through donated products, labor, materials and funding.
APsystems was honored to contribute rapid shutdown devices to help support a safe and reliable installation. Most importantly, the energy savings will allow Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado to redirect more resources toward the families it serves.
Solar can do more than run a building. It can help power a community.
